Dear Families and Students,

In the final analysis, it is not what you do for your children

but what you have taught them to do for themselves

that will make them successful human beings.

Centre for Health Protection – Seasonal Influenza Vaccination Programme

The Department of Health is offering the Seasonal Influenza Vaccination School Outreach Programme (SIVSOP) SIV to Hong Kong schools once again. Influenza vaccination is one of the most effective ways to prevent seasonal influenza and its complications. According to a local study, vaccination reduces the risk of contracting the flu in school children by half (50%).

School outreach offers a convenient option for parents that allows students to receive their flu vaccination while at school. We are currently assessing parental interest in the program and would ask you to please complete this Seasonal Influenza Vaccination Form 2025-26, if you would like your student(s) to participate. You will need to complete one form for each participating student.

Thank you for doing your part to help reduce the spread of influenza in our school community.

Magic Show – 10 October! Get Your Tickets!

I am delighted to announce a new offering from our amazing PTA. This year, they are sponsoring a magic show for students on 10 October after school. The show promises to excite students and leave them with a sense of wonder (and a fantastic twisted balloon!). Space is limited, so please scan the QR code above to reserve your ticket(s).

The Learner First – Parent Math Workshop 9 October

Thanks to the support of our wonderful PTA, our school is continuing our partnership with The Learner First, an international learning collaborative focussed on “contributive learning”. This program emphasizes the many ways that students can contribute to the classroom, their classmates, the school, the community, and the world, by focussing on the unique gifts, interests, skills, and talents that they bring to school with them every day.

This year, Elementary and Middle School Faculty will be leveraging specific tools and procedures that enhance the learning experience for students in mathematics, while High School Faculty will choose a Lead Learner from a variety of program areas. If you would like to learn more about the math strategies our faculty are actively engaged with this year, please consider joining this workshop which will be facilitated by Learner First staff.

This workshop is designed for parents of Elementary and Middle School students. Space is limited, so please RSVP at your earliest convenience to secure your spot HERE. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. We will notify all parents to confirm their attendance once the registration form closes at noon on Monday, 6 October or when all seats are filled, whichever is sooner.

Parents Make The Difference

The September issues of the Parents Make the Difference newsletters are here. These informative resources serve as excellent tools to support you in helping your child build skills appropriate for each age and stage of their educational journey.

Make sure to check out page 4 of the High School edition, where you will learn how to help your teen get a jump start on schoolwork in 10 minutes. Additionally, on page 2 of the Elementary School edition, you can find some helpful strategies to manage your child’s screen time by creating a family media plan.

I highly recommend exploring the Daily Learning Planners as they offer valuable suggestions to facilitate dialogue and strengthen your bond with your children. Enjoy the meaningful interactions I’m sure these prompts will foster!

Dear Families and Students,

Keep your eyes on the stars, and your feet on the ground.

Theodore Roosevelt, former U.S. President

We are so glad to be back! Although the weather has been challenging, we’ve had a great start to the new school year, thanks to our wonderful faculty and staff, and, of course, the efforts our students and families made to be ready for the new school year.

As the quote above reminds us, we need to keep our eyes on the goals we set for the year ahead while keeping ourselves grounded in the reality of daily life. It’s important to have clear, achievable goals, and to hold ourselves accountable to reaching them, while recognizing that life presents its fair share of surprises and natural setbacks along the way. As a school, we’re eager to help everyone in our community reach their goals and achieve success, and together we can help each other make that happen.

In order to offer appropriate support, it is important that you make us aware of any challenges you might be facing. Please keep the lines of communication open and reach out whenever you need help. Students, talk to your divisional counselor, homeroom teacher, or any adult you feel comfortable connecting with. Parents, contact your student’s homeroom teacher, the appropriate grade or subject area teacher, and your divisional principal or assistant principal. Don’t wait until small challenges become big ones. We’re here to help.

First Day of School

E-the-Eagle made our first day last Friday, 15 August incredibly special, and he brought a lot of joy and so many smiles with him. We are especially grateful to Dr. Baumgartner or, as he is affectionately known, “Dr. B”, for welcoming in the new school year in the best possible way.

Volunteer Training

We are hosting our first annual Volunteer Training session on Wednesday, 15 October from 2:00-3:00 PM, in the 123 Hall. All parents and guardians who are interested in volunteering at AIS this year need to complete a Volunteer Training session before they are eligible to volunteer. By attending this session, parents and guardians will be prepared to support the PTA and classroom teachers with school activities such as field trips and other activities within the AIS community. The meeting is scheduled just before the PTA General Meeting to make it more convenient for potential volunteers to attend.

Please note that if you completed your Volunteer Training last year, you do not need to attend this session. If you have any questions about whether or not your training is up-to-date, please email our Leadership Assistant, Ms. Floris Lai, at floris@ais.edu.hk. She will be happy to check the list for you. If you know you need to attend a training, please SIGN UP HERE to RSVP.

First PTA Meeting

Our first PTA General Meeting will be held on 24 September from 3:15-4:30 PM in the Conference Room. All meetings this year are face-to-face. We hope that your schedule will allow you to join us!

PTA Wine & Cheese & Elementary Parent Orientation

My sincere thanks to all families who attended yesterday’s event in the 125 Hall. We appreciate you making the time to learn more about your student’s teachers, schedule, and program. It was wonderful to see so many families again and to welcome new families to our school community.

AIS Belonging Cards

We are proud of a new, bespoke resource created by AIS faculty called, AIS Belonging Cards. These cards were developed by our wonderful teachers and designed to foster a sense of belonging for students. In this lesson, students established classroom norms and collaboratively selected activities from each category. Here are some images from Mrs. Henry’s Grade 8 class today. It is easy to see the engagement!

Eagle-i Blog

Please take a moment to read our newest Eagle-i Blog, featuring our recent recognition at the 21C Greater Bay Area Awards where we received the Public Choice Award for Student Agency. We’re proud of our school, of our students and faculty, and of the innovative programming that is setting American International School apart. Take a moment to read about this special achievement. I’m sure you’ll feel the same sense of pride and accomplishment.

As always, I hope the weekend is relaxing and you find time to do things that energize and inspire you so you are ready for the week ahead. See you Monday.

We are excited to welcome our students back to campus on Thursday, 14 August. The front gates will open at 7:40 am. I’ve been told that we may be seeing our favorite AIS Mascot, E the Eagle, something we always look forward to!

New Leadership Team Members

I am so pleased to welcome our newest Leadership Team members as they officially begin their roles. Ms. Jennifer Bertram, our Middle School Principal, and Mr. Pablo Viedma, our Director of Information Technology, have all been welcoming our new teachers and working with their respective returning teams and faculties to prepare for our students’ arrival this week. I am confident that we are in capable hands and look forward to the many contributions I know they will make to our school community.

A lovely array of snacks and beverages were available every day of our New Faculty Orientation Week, and we are grateful!

School Lunch Program

It’s not too late to order lunch from Cafe Concepts if you haven’t already. We remain very proud that our lunch program meals are healthy and contain no added chemicals, preservatives, or food coloring.

Communication

At AIS, we believe in the importance of frequent and ongoing communication to ensure a positive and productive learning environment. Make sure to connect with your child’s teacher(s) and Divisional Principals whenever needs arise. Open communication is essential to supporting student learning, wellbeing, and academic achievement. We often say, “Communicate early and often.” This practice helps us to avoid potential misunderstandings and promotes important communication skills we develop with our students. When parents and families work together, we make a powerful difference in the lives of our students.

Traffic On Waterloo Road

Parents and families who drop students off in front of the school are kindly reminded that they spend as little time doing so as possible. Please make sure that you and your child are prepared to exit the vehicle without delay. Our school buses are the only vehicles that are permitted to drop off in that area. We need your help to avoid a situation where the Department of Transportation changes the designation in front of Gate 123 to a no-stopping area.

Remember, drop offs can be arranged on surrounding streets. You may also wish to consider enrolling your child in school bus services as well. Please visit California Coach or complete this School Bus Service Application to sign-up. Let’s work together to keep Waterloo Road free from congestion and safe for our students and families

Registration

Thank you to all of our families for ensuring that your children are registered for school and ready to begin on Thursday, 14 August. If you have not yet registered, please be sure to check your email for important messages related to tuition and registration as well as messages from your Divisional Principals.

We look forward to seeing you on Thursday!

Dear Families and Students,

I would like to extend my sincere appreciation for the wonderful 2024-2025 school year we’ve just shared. Together, we have accomplished so much – from ISSFHK Gold Medals to 21C GBA Public Choice Awards! Our students are learning, growing, and thriving, thanks to our continued partnership. It takes a village.

This week’s divisional awards and moving up ceremonies were truly beautiful, serving as a testament to the significant academic, athletic, and artistic achievements our students have made throughout the year. I am proud of their accomplishments and the progress they have made. My thanks to all of the faculty, the PTA, and the parents who attended for making the ceremonies memorable.

Class of 2025

Congratulations once again to our 2025 graduates! The ceremony was truly beautiful, and it was such a pleasure to have families join us on campus to celebrate this momentous, once-in-a-lifetime achievement. Special thanks go out to Mr. Ris, Ms. Robertson, and Mr. Piner for their careful planning and organization. Thanks as well to Mr. McLean for his support. Their collective efforts ensured that the event was an exceptional experience for everyone who attended.

Charitable Free Dress Days – 2024-2025

From September 2024 to May 2025, our school raised money for those less fortunate, modelling our Core Values of Justice, Knowledge and Love. Together, we raised a total of HK$100,448.00 through our Charitable Free Dress Days. The generous support from our school community has been truly heartwarming. These funds will make a significant impact on these charities and the lives they touch. Thank you for your unwavering support and dedication and for making a difference in our community.

Looking Forward To The New 2025-2026 School Year

Our first day of school is Thursday, 14 August. ONLINE registration opens on Friday, 1 August and continues until Tuesday, 12 August at midnight. ON-CAMPUS Registration is By Appointment ONLY on 11 & 12 August. Please mark the dates in your calendar to ensure that your children are properly registered, in order to begin classes on time. Kindly check your AIS email in mid-July for important registration messages and booking details. Dear Families and Students,

There is so much excitement on campus as we head into the final days of school. This week our High School students enjoyed their Talent Show, our Middle School community hosted a Band Slam, and our Elementary School students performed this morning during their assembly.

Next week, our students will explore new passions, as part of our Middle School Intensives, High School students will be immersed in Infinity Week, and be visited by an Alumnae Panel, and we are all busy preparing to celebrate student achievement across all divisions throughout our last week of school.

Congratulations to our Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medal Winners!!!

Yesterday, our U20 Mixed Touch Rugby Team and our U12 Girls Football Team each took home a Gold Medal for our school! The U20 Rugby Team game was a nail-biter, going into double, extra time and eventually winning gold, 5-4. Our U12 Girls Football Team also played a very tight game, scoring 1-0 in the finals to take home the Gold. We are equally thrilled for our U12 Girls Volleyball Team who brought home a Silver Medal, and our U12 Boys Football Team who have taken home a Bronze. Congratulations to all of our players for this impressive showing and to our faculty who showed up to cheer them on!

Congratulations as well to our outstanding coaches, Mr. Lennan, Ms. McHugh, Ms. Lee, and Ms. Brosnan as well as our Athletic Director, Mr. Chan for making these wins and teams possible. I would also like to thank all of the PE Team including Mr. Duran De Sande, and Mr. XU for their support of healthy, active living, fostering daily physical activity, and cultivating a culture of collaboration and sportsmanship. Hong Kong Shark Foundation

We are thrilled to announce that AIS donated HKD 11,727 to the Hong Kong Shark Foundation (HKSF) on 30 April Charitable Free Dress Day. This contribution exemplifies our shared commitment to the protection of sharks and to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs).

The foundation has shared a certificate with us, as a way of acknowledging the difference our support is making to their organization and, ultimately, the health of our oceans and the life they sustain. Thanks to everyone for their support!

Mr. Raybaud is Retiring!

As difficult as it is to believe, Mr. George Raybaud is retiring from AIS after 39 wonderful years! This June marks his final year of teaching, and, while we are so pleased that he will be able to enjoy some time to himself, to travel, relax, and enjoy life, we will miss him terribly.

Mr. Raybaud has been a fixture at AIS since the school opened in 1986, and he has been here inspiring countless generations of students since the school opened. His legacy is one of high expectations, an unparalleled love of math, a warm sense of humor, and an unwavering dedication to his students and our school. Without a doubt, there will never be another Mr. Raybaud.

Students, please join me in sending him a fond farewell by sharing a personal message, story, or memory in the memory book that will be made available at lunch next week from Monday – Wednesday, 19-21 May in the 119 Hall. I know he will appreciate hearing from you, and I look forward to sharing the book with him soon. Thank you in advance for taking the time to make his retirement special.

Parents Make The Difference

The May issues of the Parents Make the Difference newsletters are here. These informative resources serve as excellent tools to support you in helping your child build skills appropriate for each age and stage of their educational journey.

Make sure to check out page 1 of the High School edition, where you will learn how to support your teen through end-of-school-year stress. Additionally, on page 4 of the Elementary School edition, you can find some helpful strategies to reflect on the school year and celebrate your child’s successes.

I highly recommend exploring the Daily Learning Planners as they offer valuable suggestions to facilitate dialogue and strengthen your bond with your children. Enjoy the meaningful interactions I’m sure these prompts will foster!

Dear Families and Students,

Thank you for your ongoing support and commitment to our school. Our families continue to make a difference in our lives, and our Leadership, Faculty, and Staff are grateful. Next week, High School Advanced Placement exams begin, Middle School is busy getting ready for their Middle School Science Fair and Fun Afternoon, and it’s Teacher Appreciation Week! As always, there is a lot going on at AIS. If you were here, you would feel the incredible energy from our students and enjoy the enthusiasm we hear around campus.

Teacher Appreciation Week:  6-9 May

Next week marks Teacher Appreciation Week and both the Leadership Team and PTA have planned a few special events throughout the week to express our appreciation and gratitude for our outstanding faculty, on behalf of our students and families. Of note, the PTA is catering a lovely lunch on Friday, 7 May, and we are grateful. Be sure to reach out to share your gratitude with your student’s teachers. I know they’ll appreciate it.

Mister Softee Ice Cream Trucks

The Mr. Softee Trucks were here today and they were a huge hit with students, faculty, and staff! It was so joyful to see the expressions on our students’ faces – big and small! My heartfelt thanks to our generous PTA for sponsoring what is a well-loved activity in our school community.

TECHspert International Coding Exchange – Singapore

The International Coding Exchange to Singapore was a resounding success! Twenty-three (23) TECHsperts along with students from other schools in Hong Kong accompanied the Hong Kong Government and Apple Hong Kong and Taiwan staff to visit coding and robotics schools and venues last week.

There were many workshops, tours, and cultural experiences involved over the five days, but perhaps the most fascinating was the visit to the Apple Development Centre, one of only three in the world, in Singapore, Shanghai, and California. I was incredibly proud of our students who represented us so well. Above all, they were enthusiastic, patient, and welcoming to everyone in the group. Special thanks to Mr. Green for leading the way!

HSBC Junior Golf Tournament

Our students are involved in so many activities beyond the red bricks, and I thought you might be interested in hearing about our very own Grade 2 golfer Tashi RAJORA who has secured the 2nd runner-up trophy at the HSBC Junior Golf Tournament on Saturday, 12 April. Her score of 44 in the female 6-8 group showcases her dedication and talent. Tashi has also won the 2nd runner-up trophy in the “HK Junior Close Championship” tournament, and she holds the No. 2 position in the HK Junior Order of Merit series. Please join me in extending our heartfelt congratulations to Tashi for her remarkable performance. We look forward to witnessing her continued growth and success!

Holidays 1-5 May

Have a wonderful rest during the upcoming Public and School Holidays between 1 – 5 May, and we will see you back here on Tuesday, 6 May!

My best,
