Winter Fair Musical Performances

A significant proportion of this years’ VPA performances come from our first Winter Fair in two years. It has been a delight to see this wonderful event return to the academic calendar and we are grateful to all who tuned in to the live-streamed event. If you were unable to attend – or simply want to relive the moment again – we’re proud to bring to you the entire body of musical performances once more for your viewing pleasure.

Bringing these performances to you has only been possible through a reimagining of our practice. Unable to perform to our community in a live setting, we had to find a new way of capturing the wonderful music-making present within our school. The solution was to create a series of music videos utilising the very same approach taken in the music industry. This involved multi-track sound recordings of student performances in classrooms ahead of time, to ensure the very best in audio quality. We then conducted an immense two-day filming schedule on campus, often filming whole grade levels at a time! The results presented here expertly combine the audio and film, thanks to the post-production skills of our school faculty.

We hope you’ll agree that the final products are simply outstanding and should be a source of pride for all who were involved, both in the present and to look back on with fondness and cherished memories in the future. Thank you again for celebrating with us.

Winter Fair Promotional Artwork

We are lucky to have such a talented body of visual artists here at AIS, right across the three divisions of the school. When called upon to contribute designs for our Winter Fair posters and raffle tickets, our visual art teachers were inundated with entries. After a difficult selection process the select body of work present here was chosen to represent our December 2021 event. We are thrilled with the outcomes and are pleased to be able to display them once more as part of this student-centred creative showcase.

Congratulations to Sneha BORAR (G11), Maryse CHAN (G9), Anna LEUNG (G8), Shriyanjana DUTTA (G7), Leighton CHU (G4), Yunwoo JUNG (G4), Flora ZHANG (G4), and Elbe LAM (G2) for the beautiful artwork! They worked so wonderfully for our posters and raffle tickets. Well done!

High School Drama Winter Pantos

It would not be Christmas without a good old-fashioned pantomime! Thanks to our High School Drama students, we have not one but four to watch and enjoy! These students have had so much fun interpreting these classical pantos in new ways, delving into what makes each character tick, all the while learning about this classic theatrical art form. If you’re looking for this winter-time’s pantomime hit, you’ve come to the right place! Click on the panto posters to watch!

Congratulations to our MS Band Slam finalists! What a great showcase of talented musicians in our Middle School division. With a return to on-campus practical music-making, the popular event “Band Slam” was re-established as a mainstay in the senior cohort’s musical experience. Students were solely responsible for forming bands with their peers, gathering resources, and independently learning to play their chosen song as a collective team effort.

Today, every Middle School student voted for their favourite band in a series of videos exhibited as part of a division-wide event. When considering the reduced lesson time and access to music-making that has been a challenging component of this year, Mr. Kilvington-Shaw could not be prouder of all the senior cohort’s musical journey through this process.

They have done remarkably well, as the work exhibited here shows. We hope you enjoy the music as much as we have.

Not being able to undertake the usual band program, Music students have taken advantage of various alternative pathways, encompassing choir, percussion ensembles, and creative production leveraging music technology as an instrument. Through these endeavours they’ve shown adaptability and resilience, two essential attributes of any modern-day artist working in these unprecedented times. Drama students also shifted to a new way of working for large parts of the semester. By once more employing technology as a means to realising their performance intentions, the students mastered the use of the green screen and became competent film editors and virtual collaborators. Students in Visual Art have succeeded across the three tiers of foundation, intermediate, and advanced placement, to produce work that is both thought-provoking in content and visually striking in execution. The advanced placement submissions in particular embody a level of individual expression and intent worthy of any aspiring student, who wishes to communicate and connect with an audience through their artistry. Congratulations to all the students exhibited for producing yet another body of sophisticated and enthralling work!

High School Art

Over the past year, our Foundation Art and Intermediate Art students have been working tirelessly in the art room. On this Padlet you will view a range of works from this academic year that demonstrate different techniques, themes and styles they have explored. Despite the challenges they have faced they have overcome them with ease to produce refined and thoughtful artworks. I hope that you enjoy viewing their art and please share the love by liking their work.

Art Foundation

Art Intermediate

This year’s Advanced Placement Studio Art Class presents ‘Dry Toast’- a collection of their personal portfolios driven by their own chosen theme. Despite the challenge of a pandemic and changing school schedules this class managed to create a creative as well as caring community within the classroom. This dynamic group of artists’ work speaks for itself utilising a range of techniques, styles and personal perspectives to create thoughtful work. Please scan the QR contained in the PDF brochure to view their personal portfolios.

High School Music

Band and Choir students were not able to perform live but had a great time putting together performance videos to show what they accomplished throughout the year. Online learning contributed to a great loss of ensemble music making experiences. These talented students worked extremely hard since our return to campus to put together these end of year performances for Band and Choir.

After a year of learning about the elements of music, music software, music composition and much more, the music technology students chose their own path for their final projects. Some students chose to create cell phone ringtones, sound effects pieces and their own choice compositions using loops and original music while others chose to compose and perform original works and the works of others.

High School Drama

AIS High School Drama students were given the unique opportunity of performing full length productions in a way few drama students have done before, at home! To meet this challenge, the students read through scripts specially designed to be performed in virtual settings, learned how to use green screens, and became film editors over the course of this production. They are very proud of their final products and are excited to be able to share their performance with you!

All high school drama students participated in the 2021 Ocean Awareness Contest put on by Bow Seat. The theme for this year’s competition is WATER RISING and it focuses on the connections students have to water and challenges them to put forth a call to action that invites their viewers to help protect this precious resource.

Middle School Art

We’ve had a very busy semester in Middle School Art, starting off on zoom but then finishing off the year with a bang being back on campus full time!

Middle School Music

The senior middle school cohort have been hard at work in music this semester, demonstrating their creativity, talent, and resilience in both individual and collaborative settings. Through online learning and the integration of music technology, students established themselves as composers, producers, and sound engineers.

Grade 7 expanded upon their understanding of compositional techniques by creating original music that focused on the construction of chords and harmonic devices.

Grade 8 delved into the world of Found Sound recording, collecting everyday sounds from around the home, which were then transformed into music. The work shows a high level of musical craftsmanship and technological acumen.

With a return to on-campus lessons, the event “Band Slam” was re-established as a mainstay in the senior cohort’s curriculum. Students formed bands with their peers and independently learned to play a song of their choice. Each class voted for their favourite band to go through to the final, which will be held on June 16. Considering the reduced time and access to music-making this year, Mr. Kilvington-Shaw could not be prouder of all the senior cohort’s musical outcomes. They have done remarkably well, as the work exhibited here shows.

The musical year wrapped up in a spectacular way with the senior cohort Samba Band’s performance at the annual TEDx event. The performance was powerful and invigorating, helping to bring a contrasting energy to the wonderful talks delivered by our insightful students.

Middle School Performance

It has been another unique year for MS Performance. We have developed new ways of performing both remotely and on-site with these original audio dramas. Students learned about scriptwriting, sound proofing, sound treatment, and vocal technique to prepare for this project. The creativity that students use in not only creating the content, but also finding solutions to production problems and collaboration is a great example of how our students use their knowledge and apply it. These are just some of the audio dramas out of the many excellent projects, we hope you enjoy them!

Elementary School Art

Our wonderful elementary artists have contributed Art work throughout the year; during online school, for the yearbook Art competition and especially for this end of year showcase. Our super students have been creative and flexible during the course of the year, they created Art in their home space and in different classrooms around school and have shown great resilience!

Our Grade 1 students explored the wonderful and colourful work of Eric Carle. We learnt about how Carle uses layers of mixed media papers to arrange the forms of animals, creatures and other characters. Students chose a particular animal or creature and followed Eric Carle’s technique to create their own composition.

Students in G4 took an opportunity to visit different parts of the world by creating stunning travel posters. We looked at how a travel poster is used to inspire a person to travel to a particular destination or to provide an audience with a sense of place. Students selected a destination of interest to them, whether real or fictional, then created a travel poster featuring an iconic landmark or landform.

For the AIS Yearbook Art competition, many students shared a fantastic range of Art work; themes included natural form, food, travel, AIS and friendship.

A huge thank you to our elementary students who turned in an exciting and varied collection of Art work for our end of year showcase. Please take a few minutes to enjoy watching the range of Art work including drawing, painting, collage and origami!

Elementary School Music

In Early Childhood and Elementary School music, students continued to learn how to sing, listen, describe, dance, play instruments, explore movement, and create music in different ways. There was growth in musical skills, understanding, enjoyment and meaningful perceptions drawn from music itself and enhanced by their own life experiences.

Elementary School Art

Our elementary artists have been hard at work this year. Grade 1 have produced beautiful drawings from observation, memory and imagination. Grade 2 have explored a range of natural forms and scenes, including the beautiful mountain scenery of Hong Kong. Digital design skills have been at the heart of Grade 3’s work, where they used drawing tools on Google Drawings to create colourful and unique avatars. Grade 4 have explored visual symbolism through the concept of animal form and produce wonderful, original Art work of their ‘inner animal’, using their own choice of subject and media.

Elementary School Music

Although we’ve had many changes and challenges due to Covid restrictions, that didn’t stop our EC and ES students from learning music! Lower-grade students have been dancing a lot in music class. ‘Music and movement’ activities help children develop coordination, understand rhythm concepts, and build motor skills while allowing them to practice self-expression. We also incorporated American sign language (ASL) in songs to keep students actively engaged and to help with their kinesthetic learning. This also encourages students to attach meaning to the word. All EC and ES students learn to play the musical instruments. They explore and practice rhythm and melodic concepts using unpitched and pitched percussion instruments. Upper-grade students have been hard at work composing music and making musical instruments. Students created their own steel drums on old pots, pans or cans of various sizes found at home so that each instrument has its own pitch. They then experimented further with wooden or metal strikers to identify the sound most like the steel drums they heard in music class.

Middle School ART

Our Middle School artists have been busy this year making fantastic art. Whilst it’s been a trying semester being stuck online, that hasn’t halted the creativity of our Grade 7 and 8 students. Grade 7 kicked the year off with some stunning experimental pieces based on mark-making and mixed media. We had huge fun looking into the history of colour and making our own paints with condiments and spices found at home. Unit Two focused on patterns and print-making and we were able to utilise our classroom/studio space time to make some tremendous lino print pattern design. Unit Three was short and sweet, but our artists really encapsulated the fun of typography design considering formal elements and principles of design. Grade 8 started the year producing a range of different drawings, both observational and imaginative. Students then explored the ideas and theories of the surrealist movement to create fun and exciting compositions. Unit Two was focused on portraiture, painting and the techniques and styles of the Renaissance that still inspires artists today.

Middle School Music

Grade 6 Middle School students have been composing original music using an online digital audio workstation called Soundtrap, as part of the “Music For Spaces” project. To begin, students had to consider the driving question: how can music add value to the spaces within our school? Students identified areas of our campus where music could add a sense of peace and tranquility. Inspired by the ambient pioneer Brian Eno, they then created ambient works to enhance the atmosphere of selected spaces in our school. Unfortunately, school closure has postponed the exhibition of the music being played in these spaces for the time being. In the meantime, some selected works have been specially curated here for you to enhance your online experience. We hope you enjoy the calming atmosphere that they create!

Middle School PERFORMANCE

Middle School Performance has had an interesting challenge this year, transitioning from the stage to the screen and audio. Exploring dramatic elements including tableaux, process drama, audio drama, voice, and scene study, students have worked with new technology to perform in a variety of ways. Students are now professionals in using Zoom as a rehearsal space as well as a way to capture their performances. They have also learned how to edit audio and video in apps including: Garageband, iMovie, Audacity, and other applications.

High School Music

High school music classes have looked very different this year due to Covid-19. Band students were not able to play wind instruments and choir students had to sing with masks, which made for challenging classes. Students overcame these challenges beautifully through learning and reviewing the basic fundamentals of music theory, working on some percussion instruments and trying their hands at composing and arranging. All work submitted here shows the determination and dedication of all the high school music students to rise above the limitations of our current situation.

Elementary School Art

Our elementary students are Art Superstars! Students contributed a maximum of two artworks, one created for Online School and/or one personal artwork made at home. Students in Grades 3 and 4 submitted a video of themselves explaining their artwork, which you can enjoy in these movies! This year has been unusual and challenging for art learning at home but our elementary students shine strongly in their Artwork created during Online School. Well done Grade 1 JR – 4 students!

Elementary School Music

Elementary and Early Childhood music took on a whole new life during Online School. We were able to access so many powerful online tools to help us create and respond to music. Students were able to compose their own songs using sites such as Soundtrap and Chrome Music Lab. They were also able to take photos and videos of their performances and share them through the use of Seesaw and Google Classrooms. Online School may have been different, but it did not keep us from learning all the wonderful elements of music and putting them into practice.

Middle School ART

We have had such a tremendous year in Visual Arts. The quality of work from all of our students has been fantastic. That is not to say this year has been smooth sailing. Online learning reared its ugly head at the start of this semester proving a challenge for us all. But, Ms. Bacon is happy to say, that did not hold back our talented artists and we are very proud to showcase just some of the brilliant work produced this year by our Middle School.

Middle School Music

Music in the Middle School at AIS is designed with collaboration and teamwork at the heart of our student’s learning. However, the lack of opportunity for real-time collective music-making during Online School required a refocusing on the more personal and introspective forms of music-making.

Students in Grade 7 and 8 expanded their skills as composers and producers, using the online music software Soundtrap. They learnt about the building blocks of music –  form and structure, melody and harmony, rhythm and tempo – and used these musical components to create highly original and creative compositions. The stand-out works are curated in a Youtube playlist for each Grade, designed for listening during times of study and concentration, or equally for relaxing and recreation.

Students also used this period of time to hone their individual instrumental talents as solo performers. From the many successful videos that were submitted, there are three remarkable performances highlighted here. Sunny’s piano performance of Felix Mendelssohn’s ‘Venetian Boat Song’ is delicate, captivating, and sophisticated. It’s an exceptional performance that shows a high level of maturity from this talented student. Christina’s performance of ‘July’ by Noah Cyrus went above and beyond the brief: not only did she sing the song with feeling and elegance, but she also played all the instruments superbly, recording each track herself using Soundtrap. Finally, the duet performed by Zena and Kitty of Lewis Capaldi’s ‘Someone You Loved’ is genuinely beautiful, showcasing the film-making talents as well as musical competencies of these two fine musicians.

Middle School PERFORMANCE

Online School brought a series of challenges and opportunities for students in the Grade 7 and 8 Performance courses. We took this as a chance to transform our idea of what a performance space is, how to do creative, collaborative work remotely, and how to use media as an enhancement to live performance. This video documents some of the milestones and highlights of the Online School sessions. You will see clips from some original monologues, fairy tales adapted as Greek tragedies, and devised theatre scenes. Students have developed their use of: using apps like Zoom to rehearse, record and share performances, lighting their performance space, video/audio editing, and of course, collaborating when all members of a group are in different places, and in some cases, different times. We are very proud of our developments and resiliency at this time.

High School Music

The 2019-2020 school year provided a unique opportunity for HS students to showcase their musical talents in a multitude of ways. Students wrote songs of their own, put music to a poem of their choosing, and to add their own special touch to muted video clips through the use of student written dialogue, sound effects, and music. Here are original works by our HS Music students. For all of our HS Music creations, please visit this link: Exhibition Materials

Band Slam https://www.ais.edu.hk/band-slam/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=band-slam Tue, 11 Jun 2019 08:20:33 +0000 https://www.ais.edu.hk/?p=9785 Music plays an amazing part in our lives. It can be a reflection of our mood, it is used to celebrate happiness as well as sadness, it bring people together, and it can spark special memories in our lives. As I am writing this article, I have my headphones on listening to jazz to help me focus. Just like great authors, musicians dedicate their lives into creating and performing songs that bring people joy and happiness.

Music plays an amazing part in our lives. It can reflect our mood, celebrate happiness and sadness, bring people together, and spark special memories in our lives. As I am writing this article, I have my headphones on listening to jazz to help me focus. Just like great authors, musicians dedicate their lives to creating and performing songs that bring people joy and happiness.

As part of his course curriculum, our middle school music teacher, Mr. Robert Kilvington-Shaw (Mr. KS), offered students an opportunity to participate in a music competition called Band Slam. This unique experience provided a stage for middle school students to perform the music of their choice in front of a live audience. The level of passion and confidence during each performance was incredible!

It is true when someone said, “Music makes the world go around.”

I had the opportunity to speak with Mr. KS and learn more about his thoughts on the role of music in our students’ lives. Please read on to find out more.

Why should we highlight music in our children’s lives?

This question can’t be answered thoroughly with any one example or answer, as this in itself is a lengthy subject! But If I had to pick one thing it would be the huge benefits to brain development and cognitive function that can only be experienced as a direct result of playing music. A great TED-Ed video to watch on this subject is entitled “How Playing An Instrument Benefits Your Brain”; I’d highly recommend this to any student or parent as a great insight into how music utilizes brain function like no other subject.

What is Band Slam?

Band Slam is traditionally known as Battle Of The Bands. However, I don’t believe music and the arts, in general, are well served by association with the word “Battle”, hence the re-branded name. Students in both Grade 7 and 8 were instructed to choose bands of 4-5 people and to pick a song that they would like to learn to play. This is a good example of the importance of autonomy in education, a facet of music-making that I firmly place at the center of my classroom. When students choose what it is they learn they feel empowered and get a greater reward from the experience as a result. Each class had performances from all bands, and students used criteria devised by themselves to judge the effectiveness and musicality of each performance. In turn, this in-class judging produced the winning band from each class, with the winning bands making up the final Band Slam event.

How did this project build confidence in our student community?

I feel Band Slam – like all of the musical experiences our students are exposed to in school – builds confidence because it initially provides a safe space for taking risks and feeling nerves and anxiety. For me, confidence is often born out of risk-taking and seeing a potentially uncomfortable situation through to a positive conclusion. I remember a saying I head when I was a student at school: “a brave person isn’t without fear; they just feel the fear and do it anyway”. This is the essence of building confidence through a project like Band Slam I feel. It’s learning that taking risks and putting yourself “out there” is actually a brave and ultimately gratifying thing to do. Plus, rocking out on stage to one of your favorite tunes is cool, right!?

Every day at AIS, I have the pleasure of seeing artwork displayed proudly in hallways, classrooms, stairwells, and walls. It is amazing to get a glimpse of the way students interpret the world through their eyes. At our school, we have an accomplished group of art teachers that guide and foster our students’ LOVE of beauty in the world. Art is a way for children to express themselves with different mediums. Our children become confident artists in our art program, sharing their masterpieces for the world to enjoy.

In anticipation of our whole-school art exhibition, “Journey,” we are very proud to announce that grade 12 student Scarlett (Yuxuan) Huang has achieved a rare honor for her artistic talent. Principal Mike Wing was recently notified by the College Board that Scarlett’s performance on the AP Studio Art: Drawing Portfolio Exam in May 2018 was so superior that it fell into a select category.

Students in AP Studio Art spend an intensive year creating 24 art pieces for submission to the College Board. AP exams, which include the AP Studio Art portfolios, are scored on a scale of 1 to 5, where a 5 is equivalent to an “A” grade in the corresponding university course. Scarlett not only received a 5 for her work but was also one of only 18 students in the entire world to earn a perfect score.

“I tend to observe my surroundings a lot and find interesting things that can be a potential subject for artwork, or can be translated and modified into a design element. For example, my concentration is fully based on the local MTR. I really like to illustrate details of the subject I’m drawing, so I am more of a realist when it comes to artwork because I just really appreciate the beauty of form of everything. It also challenges my technical skill.”

— Scarlett (Yuxuan) Huang

Scarlett’s AP Art teacher last year, Mrs. Katherine Chiu, says, “I’m so utterly and completely thrilled to hear Scarlett’s wonderful achievement. Scarlett’s achievement is down to her own hard work and practice over many years. I’ve had the huge pleasure of knowing and teaching Scarlett since 2013. Being able to watch her grow as an artist has been truly wonderful. Her dedication to her craft is inspiring to others (including myself!).”

It’s clear to see that art is an important part of Scarlett’s life and she continues to put a lot of time and effort into improving her skills. We could not be more proud of her accomplishment, and to see her years of dedication be recognized. We’re glad AIS got to be part of her artistic journey!

You can view some of Scarlett’s art here, and, if you want to see more of AIS’s budding artistic talent on display, be sure to come to our whole school art exhibition! The opening ceremony will be held on May 28th from 3:15-5:00pm, and general viewing will be open from 3:15 to 5:00pm May 28-30.
